Surgery
At Highland Road Animal Hospital we provide the best care for your pet. All surgery animals have labwork done prior to anesthesia. The labwork includes a Chemistry Panel and a Packed Cell Volume with Total Protein. This will let us know if your pets organ systems can properly handle the anesthesia.
All anesthetized patients are intubated with an endotracheal tube, get an intravenous catheter and are given fluids throughout the entire procedure. These are important steps which allow us to respond quickly if an emergency were to occur. All surgeries are performed on a heated surgical table to help keep your pet’s normal body temperature maintained.
We believe that monitoring an anesthetized patient is very important. Your pet’s heart rate and tissue oxygen saturation levels are displayed continuously with SurgiVet, an electronic ECG machine.
We also believe that all surgeries will require pain management, for the comfort of your pet. Your pet will receive a pain injection prior to the surgery, as well as after the surgery. They will also go home with oral pain medications. Some patients may even be sent home with oral antibiotics.
In most cases, there will be sutures that need to be removed 10 days post-surgery. The surgical site will be rechecked at this time.
Our more common elective procedures include: spays, castrations, cat declaws and dental cleanings.
